A novel secure communication network with quantum key distribution in a metropolitan area is reported. Different QKD schemes are integrated to demonstrate secure TV conferencing over a distance 45km, stable long-term operation, and application to secure mobile phones.Show More
We studied the characteristics of a shared-distribution fuel cell system that supplied a community center and several houses. The system was confirmed to be effective. Compared to costs estimated before the proposed system was installed, this is projected to become economically viable after 9 years with low CO2 from the first yearShow More
This paper reports the output degradation reduction when spot dirt adheres to a small photovoltaic module with rectangular cells. A small photovoltaic module of 13 W was applied to various electric systems. The module consisted of single crystal silicon photovoltaic cells. The effect of the output degradation was studied by changing the aspect ratio of the photovoltaic cell. It was also studied th...Show More
We have studied the characteristics of a shared distribution fuel cells system which is shared by a community center and many houses surrounding it. The system was confirmed to be effective. The utilization factor of the fuel cells was improved by about 20%, decreasing the generation cost of fuel cells and the environmental burden.Show More
This paper reports the output degradation characteristics of a small photovoltaic cell when a dirt spot adheres to the surface. The 11 W photovoltaic module GT434 was applied to various electric systems. The module consists of 34 cells, cut to 1/4 the silicon single crystal photovoltaic cell of a square with one side measuring 103 mm. The photovoltaic output power was found to be reduced by 50% wh...Show More
This paper proposes an all-optical regenerator utilizing a novel all-optical discriminator. The impacts of nonlinearity of optical gates on discrimination performance are estimated. The evaluation of discrimination performance shows that amplified spontaneous emission noise and wave form distortion in optical signals can be effectively suppressed. We experimentally demonstrate the suppression usin...Show More
Optical switching/sampling modules operating in the 1.55 /spl mu/m band were developed using ultrafast all-optical AND gates made with low-temperature grown InGaAs/InAlAs multiple quantum wells. The modules achieved a response time of 390 fs with a contrast ratio of 25 in a fiber-based experiment. Using the modules, we demonstrated all-optical demultiplexing for signal pulses corresponding to 1.05...Show More
All-optical switching performance of waveguide-type device utilizing intersubband transition is investigated by analyzing the position-dependent change of optical power densities and carrier densities in the waveguide. In the device, the three lowest energy-level subbands in the conduction band structure of asymmetric coupled quantum wells are used. The optical excitation pulse excites the electro...Show More
This paper describes a visual communication system for enclosed areas such as multi-dwellings and/or office buildings where fiber optics are wired. The system has an ISDN primary rate interface and provides unrestricted sound and video services at no charge. This paper presents the improvements upon our previous system, system configuration, service functions and transmission control methods.<>

A visual communication system for an apartment house where fiber optics is used is presented. It offers a variety of services such as video mail, camera door phones, and video telephones in the apartment house. This system is mainly composed of three parts: digital loop network and analog video bus, apartment house controller, and apartment outlets. The system design, the call control procedures, ...Show More
An optical fiber cable transfer splicing system is developed for use in removing or changing optical fiber cables. The system enables rapid transfer from existing optical fiber cables to newly installed ones. The transfer is carried out synchronously using two mechanically transferable connectors which terminate the optical fiber cables at two different points, such as manholes. Before the transfe...Show More
An identification system using a local-light injection and detection coupling system is developed. The relation of bending fiber radius to both local-light injection and detection coupling efficiencies is shown. This system can be used for distances of up to 21 km at a bending radius R=7 mm. Also, the line number in the fiber ribbon, can be confirmed and transfer splicing loss can be estimated usi...Show More
Fundamental experiments conducted on optically gated optical switches using organic materials with large optical nonlinearities are reported. An optical Kerr shutter was constructed, whose main part is a long-length and miniature-core glass capillary, filled with a solution of charge transfer organic material of 4-(N,N-diethylamino)- beta -nitrostyrene (DEANST). The capillary waveguide made it pos...Show More
Optical gating is demonstrated using fast-response CdSeTe-doped glass. Continuous-wave probe light and pulsed gate light collinearly illuminate a Fabry-Perot nonlinear optical cavity consisting of two external mirrors and the doped glass. The output of the probe light is gated by the gate light with fast response time. The gating is caused by refractive-index change in the glass due to the carrier...Show More
An optical Kerr shutter with much higher efficiency than the conventional CS/sub 2/ liquid is demonstrated, utilizing a solution of pi -conjugated monomer material. Third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility chi /sup (3)/ of the solution is evaluated by the efficiency of the Kerr shutter operation. The chi /sup (3)/ value of the solution depends on the molecular density, the molecular orientatio...

A new slack fiber organizer structure composed of individual box-shaped plastic sheets is presented. It is capable of accommodating 800 fiber splices with the same size as the existing metallic cable joints. The conditions to accommodate reinforced mass-splices and slack fibers into the organizer are clarified by considering optical loss increase and reliability evaluation for bent fiber ribbons, ...Show More
