Abstract:

This paper aims to assess Bangladesh’s present wind energy scenario for electricity generation and do a techno-economic analysis of a new potential wind site in Bangladesh. The potential of five wind sites is realized by the Weibull distribution of wind velocities. Then, five commercial wind turbine models are analyzed for a chosen potential site with a view to finding out the best turbine model for energy production. The present value of cost (PVC) and the net present value (NPV) methods are used to estimate each turbine per kWh cost. Finally, among all the selected turbines, Aeolos-H 60kW wind turbine shows the best result in term of wind power output, capacity factor, unit cost and NPV.

I. Introduction

Global warming and climate change issue have become a significant concern over the past few decades. The burning of fossil fuel sources for different purposes like electricity production in power plants and the use in transport fuels plays key roles in producing greenhouse gases and air pollution. To reduce the number of carbon gas emissions, electricity generation from renewable energy sources has become a promising solution in recent years. Wind energy has emerged as one of the most promising sources of electricity generation among different renewable energy sources. The worldwide electrical energy production by harnessing wind energy has increased quite well. According to the latest report of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the total electrical energy production capacity from wind energy sources has reached the benchmark of 783 GW with a growth rate of 18% at the end of the year 2020 [1]. Like many countries of the world, in Bangladesh, the wind energy resources are being explored so that the percentage share of total electricity generation from wind energy sources can increase significantly. In this paper, an overview of Bangladesh’s present wind energy scenario has been discussed, and techno-economic analysis for installing a suitable wind turbine system at the Subornochar region in Bangladesh has been done. The paper is organized as follows: section. I describe the context of this research work, section. II discusses the present wind energy potential and electricity generation picture of Bangladesh. Some new potential wind sites are analyzed through the Weibull distribution of the wind speeds in the section. III. Section. IV and section. V provide a techno-economic analysis for installing a wind turbine system in the Subornochar region, and finally, the conclusion is drawn in section. VI.
