Abstract:

Automatic personality recognition aims to assign a personal profile to the author by measuring the Big Five personality factors automatically. The present paper focuses on an approach developed to recognize the personality of the author by evaluating their writings. The score for each of the Big-Five personality traits is computed programmatically. Based on the essays of the author as an input, parse trees for the sentences are constructed to identify negations. Later, stopwords are removed, the text is tokenized and stemming is performed. Only the required information is extracted by using the parts of speech tagging in English language and the stemmed data is compared to the terms in the dataset which are categorized according to the Big Five Factors of personality. Finally, the matched percentage of words is calculated and scaled proportionately to obtain results.

I. Introduction

The major contribution of the study of language lies in the understanding about how it can provide knowledge as to the character of mental processes and the structures they form and manipulate. Many researchers have found that there exists a correlation to the personality of a person and his linguistics [1]. Personality recognition from text primarily concentrates on analyzing the text samples of the author. The evolutions in this field can contribute to significant advancements in diverse industries. For example, it helps an HR manager to make a record of the personality traits before employing and also look for people who are likely to be suitable to the company's culture. It could also assist them to pair employees with similar personality traits which is likely to boost up their collective performance. It would be a fringe benefit to the already booming e-commerce companies which can use the data available about the buyers for customizing their products and services and advertising them with right emotions at right places. It would remarkably effect all the stages of a product, right from its design to its marketing and selling.
