Abstract:

Rapid and accurate collision detection is of critical importance in physical simulations and in interactive use of virtual environments. At the same time, the complexity and the real-time of virtual environment bring a higher requirement to collision detection. In this paper, we present a novel collision detection algorithm based on the slice projection (SP). The process contains coarse detection and precision detection. The result has been implemented and tested. The experimental result has been given and compared with other typical collision detection algorithm.

I. Introduction

In the application of 3D virtual scene, the users’ immersive will disappear even exhausted, when seeing airplanes flight across the peaks in unreal situation. Visual system plays a key role as a subsystem in many large and complex simulation systems. For example, in flight simulation system, it can simulate the whole process of taking off and landing, imitate the effect of airplane's impacting with the ground after crashing and bursting into flames, produce painstaking and authenticity virtual 3D scene, such as runway, terminal, mountains, rivers, and fields around the airport. The visual information is extremely important because of the final application to interactive simulation system. Therefore the visual system's richness, fidelity and clarity will affect the quality of flight simulation. Collision detection is one of the keys to enhance the realistic of simulation system. Fast and efficient collision detection plays a vital role in improving authenticity, credibility and immersive of the simulation system.
