I. Introduction
In order to achieve efficient pneumatic conveyance of pulverized fuel in coal fired power plants, it is necessary to measure the velocity of fuel particles in an on-line continuous manner. In recent years the use of biomass fuels is becoming increasingly widespread to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power generation. The biomass fuels are often used to replace part of coal supply at existing power stations and this co-firing approach is adopted in many countries due to concerns over issues of pollution and energy sustainability. To achieve maximum combustion efficiency and minimum emissions from co-firing combustion processes, continuous velocity measurement of biomass/coal mixtures in the fuel feed pipes becomes indispensable.
