Abstract:
An electric drive system that is simple and efficient is proposed and simulated for a two wheeler (moped). The drive system is a 3-phase ac squirrel cage induction motor of rating 1 hp, 230 volts, 50 Hz and 2 pole. It is chosen due to its low cost, high reliability and high speed. The induction motor is optimized for high peak torque which is a special requirement of any vehicle drive. A 36 volts 75 Ah battery is used as the power source of the moped to satisfy the v/f control requirement of the motor. A high frequency step up chopper is proposed to obtain the maximum requirement of 230 volts dc from 36 volts battery. A conventional low frequency PWM, 3-phase EPROM based inverter with soft switching scheme to reduce the switching stress is designed, simulated. Experiments were conducted to check its performance. A simple control scheme to operate the motor in the peak torque region during starting and under overload condition is incorporated for optimum performance of the motor. The simulated results and the experimental results are matching with the theoretical values.
