Abstract:

Integrating virtual reality with Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been recognized for its numerous benefits in enhancing visualization, spatial recognition, distance and real-time collaboration, and efficiency in construction projects. However, there is a growing interest in exploring the cognitive aspects associated with using different types of avatars in these systems. This paper explores the cognitive implications of avatars in BIM systems, examining how they influence user experience, perception, decision-making, and overall cognitive load.

I. Introduction

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of a facility’s physical and functional characteristics. It serves as a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility. BIM involves creating and managing data throughout a building’s lifecycle [1], [2], from initial design and construction through operation and maintenance, and supports decision-making. Integrating virtual reality (VR) into Building Information Modeling systems has been an evolving process, significantly advancing over the past decade. Initial explorations into this integration began in the early 2000s, but it wasn’t until around 2010 that significant strides were made. The development of affordable and accessible VR hardware, such as the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR, along with improvements in BIM software like Autodesk Revit, facilitated this integration.
