A Bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonator is an essential component in the RF filter and duplexer of mobile devices. The BAW resonator consists of a piezoelectric layer sandwiched between a top electrode and a bottom electrode. In this paper, a novel BAW resonator structure is presented to reduce the electrical loss of electrodes and thereby lower insertion loss which is important to achieve low loss R...Show More
A novel structure of hybrid bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonator with low temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF) is presented. Implemented with a pair of quarter-wave reflectors on air-cavity reflector, the hybrid BAW resonator exhibits a TCF of as low as -11.5 ppm/°C and an effective electro-mechanical coupling coefficient (kt2) of 5.1% at the frequency of 2.5 GHz. The hybrid BAW resonator also...Show More
To suppress spurious mode of the BAW (Bulk Acoustic Wave) resonator, advanced lateral structures are proposed. Three different techniques of apodization, air-edge reflector and border frame are integrated. Firstly, apodization is the method to design a proper shape of resonator which avoids parallel edges. By doing so, spurious mode is significantly improved at main resonances. Secondly, air-edge ...Show More
A bulk acoustic wave resonator (BAWR) is an essential component of RF filters and duplexers in wireless communication devices. The BAWR consists of a piezoelectric layer sandwiched between bottom and top electrodes. Its resonance frequency shifts as an environment temperature changes, normally ranging -25~-30 ppm/ °C, of which phenomenon is referred to temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF). W...Show More
We investigate the performance of aluminum nitride (AlN) resonator based bulk acoustic wave (BAW) structure made with air edge reflector and gold (Au) edge electrode. BAW Resonators have been fabricated, some devices using a thick film of e-beam evaporated gold as edge electrodes at the border of the resonator on bottom, top electrode. The air reflectors provided at the border of the resonator sup...Show More
A novel RF duplexer with balanced receiving output ports and low temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF) is proposed. The topology of balanced receiving RF filter is designed with both lattice and ladder type. RF resonators in this filter are designed based on a bulk acoustic wave (BAW) structure in which each layer has alternative negative and positive TCF values. The RF circuit block performi...Show More
