Summary form only given. Most community antenna television (CATV) systems installed today use the amplitude modulation-vestigial sideband (AM-VSB) format and operate around 1.3 /spl mu/m. It has been recognized for several years that a Pr-doped optical fibre amplifier operating at 1.3 /spl mu/m suitable for analog signals would be very useful. We have recently reported that a suitable design assoc...Show More
We present a simple and efficient model which takes gain stabilization and internal filtering for gain equalization into account. This model allowed the optimization of the filter position in the doped fiber to obtain the best gain stabilization and lowest noise figure. Finally, we demonstrate that equalized and stabilized gain amplifiers are efficient devices for wavelength division multiplexing ...Show More
A comprehensive survey of photosensitivity in silica glasses and optical fiber is reviewed. Recent work on understanding the mechanisms contributing to germanium or aluminum doped fiber photosensitivity is discussed within the framework of photoelastic densification models.Show More
Femtosecond optical pulses of 110-200-fs width have been produced using a gain-switched distributed-feedback semiconductor laser followed successively by a linear compression stage and a nonlinear compression stage. Analysis is focused on this last stage where pulses with peak powers corresponding to 10and 12-order solitons are fed at the fiber input end. Experimental results are well described us...Show More
Summary form only given. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that piezoactuated gratings can be combined to build active demultiplexers or wavelengths routers. With minor modifications, this device can operate as a programmable add and drop multiplexer.Show More
We have studied a new design of WDM bidirectional optical power limiting amplifier. It involves one erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), 4-port circulators and fiber grating reflectors. A 25 dB optical gain is measured for a bidirectional operation. A power limiting behavior is observed, a 20 dB variation of input power leads to less than 2 dB of output power variation.Show More
Gratings have been written in a commercially available elliptical-core fiber using the transverse holographic method. Type I and II-A dynamics have been observed as being strongly anisotropic. As a result, the grating reflectivity can be made highly polarization dependent according to the experimental conditions of the inscription.<>Show More
It is shown that in low-concentration erbium-doped silicate fibers (below 1000 p.p.m.), a residual absorption at 980 nm cannot be saturated. Usual models for upconversion of Er/sup 3+/ cannot match this behavior nor explain a fluorescence lifetime independent of pump power and erbium concentration. A phenomenon, the pair induced quenching (PIQ), that is compatible with the previous experimental re...Show More
The spectra of Nd/sup 3+/- and Pr/sup 3+/-doped fibre lasers utilizing an intracore Bragg grating reflector written at 1.08- mu m Bragg wavelength and a dichroic mirror for cavity feedback have been investigated under 0.6-GHz resolution. Two oscillating frequencies corresponding to two orthogonal linear polarization states of laser emission were observed. The frequencies and orientations of the tw...Show More
