We have designed, fabricated, and characterized a low polarization dependent multicast and select (MCS) switch based on a newly developed novel bulk SOA co-integrated with passive waveguides. The proposed new bulk SOA-based MCS switch requires the co-integration of active SOAs (gate and booster) with several passive InP elements. First, we have presented a theoretical analysis and the design and p...Show More
Optical wireless data center networks (OW-DCNs), which employ optical wireless technology and optical wired switching technology, are gaining interest as they promise to eliminate cable complexity, as well as to create high bandwidth interconnections and a low-cost and power-efficient system. In particular, the incorporation of optical tunable transmitters (T-TXs) and passive optical beam steering...Show More
We propose an OW-DCN using a nanoseconds photonic integrated SOA based multicast switch chip to realize fast optical packet switching. System experiments with a fabricated 4×2 switch chip in a 4×4 rack OW-DCN show a WDM multicast switch operation at 50Gb/s with <1.5dB power penalty.Show More
An ultrawide-band (UWB), O- to L- band, polarization insensitive (PI) 1 × 12 100 GHz channel spacing arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is designed and realized in 3-μm Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) platform. PI and UWB operations are achieved by directly exploiting the UWB 3-μm PI silicon waveguide as the arrayed waveguide. The PI AWG can be employed as demultiplexer and multiplexer in photonic integra...Show More
Internet-generated traffic growth is forcing the development of new low-cost solutions in metropolitan area networks (MANs), in particular in the transceiver and network node architectures. Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based wavelength blockers can be used as fundamental building blocks to add and drop optical channels in the node architecture of several network hierarchical levels. Even ...Show More
Low polarization-dependent semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) co-integrated with passive circuits via an easy fabrication process are highly demanded in optical communication systems. However, despite several SOAs have been reported, co-integration of polarization-independent bulk SOA with passive waveguides in the InP platform to generate complex systems remains an issue. In this work, we des...Show More
We experimentally evaluate an InP 1x8 photonic integrated wavelength selective switch based on SOA optical gates. Results show error-free operation with a limited penalty at 10 and 40 Gb/s NRZ-OOK, on-chip gain $\gt7$ dB and cross-talk $\lt -45$ dB. ©2021 The Authors OCIS codes: (250.5300) Photonic integrated circuits; (130.4815) Optical switching devicesShow More
C- and L-band polarization insensitive 1×12 AWG with 100GHz channel-spacing is fabricated on SOI. Results show <3.8dB loss, <-30dB crosstalk, <2.6dB polarization dependent loss, <0.1nm polarization dependent wavelength shift and <0.3dB BER penalty at 10Gbps.Show More
We experimentally demonstrate multi-band (O- to L-band) monolithic and hybrid photonic integrated wavelength selective switches with fast switching and different data format and data-rates for flexible low-cost 5G/6G optical metro and access distribution networks. We also present results on photonic integrated multiband optical cross-connect switches.Show More
Photonic integrated wavelength selective switches are integral part of Reconfigurable add/drop multiplexer nodes and enable efficient utilization of resources in high-capacity metro networks. Photonic integrated wavelength selective switches play instrumental role in enabling dynamic reconfigurability and support efficient utilization of network resources. In this paper, design, and implementation...Show More
An ultra-wide band (O to L) 4×4 polymer switch matrix is experimentally demonstrated. Results show <0.6dB polarization-dependent loss, >36dB switching ratio, <6.5dB fiber-to-fiber loss, and error-free operation with <0.15dB power penalty at 10Gb/s and 50Gb/s.Show More
We report the proof-of-concept functional demonstration of the first hybrid integrated wavelength blocker switch for metro network realized via hybrid integration of passive SiPh deMux/Mux AWGs and active InP SOA gates. Error free 10 Gbps/channel NRZ transmission per wavelength channel is demonstrated with <; 1.5dB power-penetty.Show More
We report the PASSION approach for the implementation photonic switching modules in the metro core and access networks for 5G application. Multi-degree switching ROADM nodes are used at the metro-core level, while access network is constituted by low-cost 2-degree ROADM nodes. PIC design for Wavelength selective switches and Multi-cast switches used in the metro-core network is presented. Two inte...Show More
We assess the performance of a modular photonic integrated circuit (PIC) for space and time optical switching as an optical add-drop node for metro-access network applications. The PIC based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) technology enables the implementation of compact, low cost and lossless add-dropping through fast optical switching. Data integrity measurements demonstrate error-free ...Show More
An SDN reconfigurable metro-access network based on 2-degree ROADM nodes with edge-computing and network slicing fulfilling the 5G requirements is demonstrated. Successful SDN-controlled dynamic network-slicing generation, add/drop functionality, bandwidth and edge-computing resources assignment are achieved.Show More
We demonstrate dynamically re-configurable and contention-free metro-access ring based on low-cost SOA 2-degree mini-ROADMs providing both switching and amplification. Results show successful SDN-assisted multiple add/drop 10Gbps WDM traffic in metro-access ring with <;1 dB power penalty.Show More
A wide-scan and broadband focal-plane array (FPA) concept is introduced in this article, which provides high antenna gain and effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) with electronic beamsteering within a relatively large field of view (FoV), up to +/-20°. The antenna uses a bifocal double-reflector concept that optimizes the illumination of the focal-plane region. In this way, we have reduced th...Show More
