The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a wholly-owned corporation of the United States of America formed in 1933 by an Act of Congress. This paper presents an historical overview of the TVA system, a present day and future outlook, and a discussion of future trends in the power industry and their impact on the bulk transmission system.Show More
This paper presents a high level overview of overvoltages and insulation performance and offers a brief overview of insulator technology and development. Frequent lightning and switching, an ageing system, and contaminated insulators are some of the factors that impact transmission line performance and reliability. A lightning case study is included in this paper with results to illustrate the imp...Show More
This paper provides an overview of the current status of the transmission system in the Southern Companies' service areas in Georgia, Alabama, northwest Florida, and coastal Mississippi including a discussion of the approaches utilized in planning and expanding the transmission system. The paper also discusses current and emerging challenges in ensuring safe, reliable, and economical system expans...Show More
Crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated power cables are used for transmission and distribution of electrical power. Such cables are subjected to extensive high voltage testing for performance evaluation and quality control purposes. During such testing, the cable ends have to be prepared carefully to make a proper end termination. Usually deionized water terminations are used for this purpose. ...Show More
Different methods of calibrating UHF sensors for gas insulated substations (GIS) were investigated in the past. This paper compares existing calibration methods and shows their advantages and disadvantages. To overcome the known disadvantages, the design of a novel cone calibration system is described. The paper delivers insight into the development, design and testing of this new calibration syst...Show More
Numerical analysis of UHV gapless metal-oxide surge arresters have been performed utilizing capacitive-resistive coupling transient electric field simulations. The calculations are performed in 3D and for 3-phase installations. Two types of voltage grading methods for surge arresters have been studied, with grading rings and with external grading capacitors. The results show that important advanta...Show More
For environment-friendly vacuum interrupter (VI), higher voltage operation and more compactness are required. From this point of view, and to enhance the electrical insulation performance of VI, it is needed to introduce the field optimization techniques. In this paper, we propose a new optimization technique for electrode configuration with floating potential in VI. We applied this optimization t...Show More
In this paper, we describe the two-station measurements of triggered-lightning electromagnetic fields performed by the University of Florida Lightning Research Group in 2008-2009. Lightning is triggered at Camp Blanding, Florida, where near-field signals were recorded. Far-field signals were recorded at the Lightning Observatory in Gainesville, located about 45 km away from Camp Blanding.Show More
The increase of voltage level for AC and DC transmission systems requires some changes in the high voltage testing for Ultra High Voltage (UHV) equipment. After a short description of the coordination work in the standardization bodies the requirements for UHV equipment are mentioned. The main points concerning high voltage testing of UHV equipment are the impulse shape of standard lightning impul...Show More

Since the 1970s Manitoba Hydro has performed 60 Hz withstand tests together with partial discharge measurements on new and salvaged bushings and current transformers rated ≤115 kV using facilities at our service centre. Similar equipment rated 230 kV, 550 kVac and 500 kVdc has been tested only under special circumstances, and as a result has experienced a higher failure rate in service. A high vol...Show More
Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Radio Frequency (RF) PD location technique is a new method, which is based on diamond shape sensor array PD detection and time-delay function. In this paper, an UWB RF PD location system is designed, which works in the bandwidth of 2GHz-8GHz. The time-delay error has been brought down to 0.3ns. but the locating error of some PDs is larger than 30cm. To make clear this problem ...Show More
In a general way, in an electric power utility the current transformers (CT) are used to measurement and protection of transmission lines (TL) The Power Line Carriers systems (PLC) are used for communication between electrical substations and transmission line protection. However, with the increasing use of optical fiber to communication (due mainly to its high data transmission rate and low signa...Show More
Ultra-wide-band PD detection techniques have the capacity to enhance the amount of information obtained about the measured PD activity. The UWB method is not without its problems. The physical arrangement of the test circuit plays an important part in the response obtained. Despite this obvious dependency, the test circuit configuration is often not acknowledged in papers reporting UWB measurement...Show More
Switching over-voltage level plays a decisive role on the UHV equipments selection and equipment costs. This paper discussed the suppress effects of different methods. Two novel surge arresters under developing are introduced. Presently, the closing resistors are added to suppress the switching overvoltage, if low-residual arresters can be put into operation, the closing resistors need not be adde...Show More
Some problems of lightning overvoltage simulations for transmission lines with nonlinear corona model were presented in our previous papers. Obtained transients for relatively large peak values of subsequent lightning returnstroke currents, carried out by application of EMTP-RV, showed that nonlinear models of back-flashover and ZnO arresters work properly, while the corona model implemented in EM...Show More
In this paper, the parameters that caused the onset of fundamental (Period-1) ferroresonance upon a 400 kV transmission system are investigated. After validating the developed simulation model by comparing the ferroresonance field test records (voltage and current) with the simulation waveforms, network parameters in particular the capacitances of line are studied. The overall studies suggest that...Show More
Careful analysis of transients in shipboard power systems is important for future all-electric ships to achieve long life times of its components. In order to accomplish results with high accuracy it is recommended to validate cable models as they have significant influence to amplitude and oscillation frequency of voltage transients. The authors propose comparison of model and measurement using s...Show More
This paper presents post event analyses of three inrush events that caused relay misoperation. It then presents the results of an EMTP study that illustrates the degree to which different techniques can mitigate the transformer inrush transient and compares this to the predicted performance of closing resistors in an identical application. It demonstrates that controlled switching of a transformer...Show More
This paper introduces the Hilbert-Huang transform method which is composed of Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Hilbert Transform. Seven kinds of common power system over-voltages are analyzed by HHT, results show that the instantaneous amplitude spectrum, Hilbert marginal spectrum, Hilbert time-frequency spectrum can be used as characteristic parameters for different types of over-voltage cl...Show More
This work shows that the discharges pattern and final length, Lf, of creeping discharges depend on the amplitude and polarity of the voltage, the type of gas (mixture) and pressure similarly as in the case of the materials we investigated previously. Lf is longer when the point is positive than when it's negative; this is likely due to the influence of space charge on the electric field. Lf increa...Show More
Moisture content in transformer oil is an important index for equipment condition. Based on technical requirement of on-line monitoring of moisture content, this paper presents a water solubility estimation method using least square technique. Water distribution and solubility in oil is analyzed, and the Karl-Fischer method is adopted to determine moisture content in one oil sample; then, temperat...Show More
Corona is a partial electrical discharge and its inception depends on the gas density, which is affected by the ambient pressure and temperature. During times of power disruption, it may be necessary to overload certain feeders for a limited time, resulting in conductors running at temperatures above normal. The layer of air adjacent to the conductor is also heated. In this paper the effect of the...Show More
As vacuum attracts attention from a viewpoint of high insulation performance and environmental-friendliness, vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) are expected to develop into higher voltage level.
