The 2017-2027 Decadal Survey for Earth Science and Applications from Space identified Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) as a key Designated Observable to be addressed with a future Earth mission concept. The thermal infrared (TIR) aspect of this new mission includes, for the first time, the development and production of thermal and volcanic standard data products: Level-3 Elevated Temperature Feat...Show More
Within the framework of Kyoto & Carbon Initiative of the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA), we used JERS-1 and ALOS/PALSAR radar images to build regional and continental scale mosaics of Sahara. The unique capability of L-band SAR to map subsurface structures in arid areas revealed previously unknown geological features: craters, faults, paleo-rivers. The latter are of particular interest for water res...Show More
The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the influence of micro- and macrotopography on PALSAR fine-beam dual backscattering in the characterization of iron laterites in Carajas Province, Amazon Region. The moderate linear correlation between sigma0 and surface roughness indicated that, only for L-HH polarization, sigma0 was modulated by the morphology of the geological surfaces.Show More
The National Academies Decadal Survey for Earth Science recommended that NASA pursue global imaging spectroscopy and thermal infrared measurements in the coming decade [1]. Both measurements would offer repeat coverage on approximately five-day to biweekly cadence, with comprehensive coverage of the globe's coastal and terrestrial area. This would be an unprecedented volume of data with the potent...Show More
Using L-band SAR data from JERS-1 and ALOS, we produce regional mosaics of Sahara in order to map subsurface geology. A first mosaic of eastern Sahara using more than 1600 JERS-1 scenes allowed the discovery of unknown paleo-rivers, faults, and impact craters. On-going work concerns a new Lband high-quality mosaic of the entire Sahara, based on ALOS/PALSAR data.Show More
Geologic applications of remote sensing data often rely on ancillary and support information for effectively mapping geolithologies. This work aims to investigate the capabilities of mapping geologic outcrops of sedimentary rocks using only spectral information coming from aerial hyperspectral data. MI VIS hyperspectral data obtained in the area of Serra di Falco, in southern Italy, have been expl...Show More
Utilization of the LMS in teaching is very crucial and reflects on the students learning. The current practices of student-centered learning (where students contribute to the subject and get involved in the learning process) can be applied very effectively through using the LMS. This paper summarizes an experiment of using the LMS (Blackboard CE8) in teaching a graduate course (Advanced Structural...Show More
Increased satellite image data availability, with different spatial, spectral, and radiometric resolutions, present some challenges for image fusion techniques to be used in many application areas. In this study, we demonstrate an improved technique combining RADARSAT (SAR), Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Landsat (ETM+) images with surficial geology data into two complementary composite image m...Show More
Three-dimensional (3D) modeling of geological body is an important issue of 3D GIS and 3D geosciences modeling (3DGM). Generalized tri-prism (GTP) model and its components are introduced in this paper. Based on the analysis of previous researches on 3DGM, a new approach (rock pillar body partition modeling, RPBP) for 3D modeling and visualization of complex geological body (CGD) based on GTP was p...Show More
In order to improve display effect and analysis and decision ability of marine geology information, the Marine Geology 3D Geographic Information System is established based on Skyline software and Visual studio.NET development platform. It is a WebGIS application platform, builds submarine 3D scene by using the satellite image and marine geology survey data, provides 3D scene roaming, attribute qu...Show More
In this paper a general data management tool based on Oracle database and Spring MVC framework is designed and developed, which takes advantage of oracle's high-performance nested query and combines the recursive data of relational database with the front-end tree structure. The general data management tool allows customizing data directories and data structures as needed, thus the storage and que...Show More
Field studies in Geology typically require taking notes in a paper based field notebook that is then stockpiled for future references. The so stored data is hardly accessible over the years, and information sharing is also difficult because of searching time, and the particularities in notation from different experts. Although organizations like the Open Geospatial Consortium favor the standardiza...Show More
In the complex geology of Lingnan area, the foundation settlement process formed by the high filling project is complicated, there are many factors and the factors influence each other. In the high filler project, although the settlement of the high-fill is monitored in real time and some monitoring data are obtained, it is difficult to determine the change trend of the amount of settlement in a c...Show More
The main objective of this study is to develop an implemented system based on MapGIS for managing and visualizing urban geology information, such as borehole, remote sensing (RS) data, geophysical and geochemical data-in Shanghai City. More than 20,000 boreholes, 80G byte RS data and other geological data were managed with three levels in the system. For the convenience of sharing information and ...Show More
A calibration/validation (cal/val) working group (CVWG) was established as part of a US government study of the Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) observing system priority identified in the 2017 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine decadal survey of Earth sciences and applications [1]. The 2017 decadal survey recommended the SBG mission as a designated observable to improve me...Show More
Seismic microzonation of urban areas is used to be determined from few soils' response measurements in each area. In consequence, results can be considered correct only in the case of possible depth-dependent soils, being the existence of lateral soil changes the cause of imprecision. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) could be a useful tool to determine, previously to the passive seismic measurements...Show More
A simple model of layered structural geological bodies already have more mature solutions, while the complex structure modeling and interpolation algorithm of three-dimensional space are becoming the key difficulties. Discussion in the paper not only realize the special geological interpolation processing, also makes the local Kriging interpolation in a variety of geological body model of the scop...Show More
Scientists and engineers from the United States and Italy are developing a thermal infrared (TIR) free-flyer concept that forms an essential element of the NASA Surface Biology & Geology (SBG) designated observable and the greater NASA Earth System Observatory (ESO), which also includes observations of aerosols, clouds, convection, and precipitation; mass change; and surface deformation & change. ...Show More
The application of GPR in a Canadian salt and potash mine in New Brunswick, within a structurally complex geological setting, is discussed. When the mine was started in 2014, occurrences of anhydrite were unexpectedly encountered in mining development rooms. Furthermore, occasional undulations and folding in the potash ore seam complicated production mining because the potash ore would get diluted...Show More
Hyperspectral remote sensing can support exploration activities helping in the recognition of lithologycal outcrops over extended areas. This is mainly due to the nature of the mineral reflectance spectra which feature very narrow absorption peaks, therefore requiring hyperspectral sensors to be assessed. In this work, the capabilities for geolithology recognition of aerial hyperspectral data have...Show More
In this paper, a methodological approach to classify lithology features using random forest and multisensor satellite imagery is presented. The incorporation of remote sensing techniques into regional geology mapping is important in order to make possible the implementation of monitoring strategies aimed to enhance national capabilities to provide information for natural disasters management, sust...Show More
