Abstract:
The future shortage of fossil fuels and rising environmental issues has prompted extensive research into electric vehicles (EV) in recent years. This leads to increased requirement for EV charging stations (CS) throughout the distribution system (DS) and/or microgrid. The energy available in DS is used to charge the batteries of plugged-in EVs in the CSs. Hence, microgrid or modern DS requires a well-connected network of CSs. This paper studies the effect of interconnection of DC fast charging station (DCFCS) in a microgrid. The growing EV charging infrastructure offers a number of issues for the existing DS. In this paper multiple DCFCS are considered to be connected in a microgrid along with different renewable based generation (RBG) and conventional sources. The performance of this microgrid is studied for both charging and discharging mode. By changing the reactive power flow to the grid, the DCFCS seeks to regulate the grid voltage level. Integration of RBGs has the potential to minimise power consumption from the grid. The effect of interconnection of multiple DCFCS along with RBG is demonstrated in this paper by MATLAB simulation. The proposed integrated system shows considerable improvement in THD level of grid current compared to the existing EV connection frameworks.
