I. Introduction
ROTOR position measurement is a crucial measurement signal in field-oriented controlled (FOC) permanent magnet synchronous machine drive applications. Growing electrification in the transportation sector demands compact, electro-mechanical actuation with higher torque density due to space constraints in a vehicle. These applications include power generation systems and propulsion systems for electric airplanes [1], electric powertrain for automobiles, agriculture, and mining industry [2] and electric steering systems for vehicles [3]. PMSMs are preferred in above applications not only due to higher torque density and efficiency, but also due to ease of FOC implementation that provides superior dynamic response compared to counterparts such as induction machines and reluctance machines.
