Usability Evaluation of Touch Screen Interface with Various User Groups

Currently, touch screen interfaces are adopted in many consumer products in our daily lives. However, there is still little empirical knowledge studied about their interaction, especially in food serving outlets. Therefore, in this paper we investigated how interact with using touch screen interface for self ordering some beverage and dessert. The method of this system consisted of three main parts: 1.) establishing hardware, 2.) developing software, and 3.) evaluating interaction. We used usability method to collect empirical data and measure how users interact. In the experiment, we used factorial design. Factors of user that we concerned are age, gender, and experience with touch screen interface. We found that only two factors that affect the time spending to ordering: 1.) user's experience with touch screen and 2.) interaction between users' experience with touch screen and users' age. From interviewing, most users stated that they liked this UI because it provides users convenient, friendly, and attractive with many images.

I. Introduction

Nowadays, touch screen technology has gained considerable interest in many parts of everyday usage items due to the evolution of consumer products such as iPad, iPhone, tablet, and smart phone. Touch screen [1] is a clear sheet of plastic or glass with tiny sensors that detect pressure from either a fingertip or a pointing device. When these sensors are pressed, they perform the functions of clicking and dragging. A software utility needs to be installed on the computer hard drive to further customize the different settings. Important characteristics of touch screen are high durable, less susceptible to contaminants, and scratch resistant. Moreover, it is transparent enough to visualize menu, it should have better response time and stability.
