Abstract:

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are widely adopted in buildings for their more extended lifespan advantage, low power consumption, high efficiency, and low implementation cost. As a result, the visible light communication-based indoor navigation system becomes feasible. A few factors could affect the accuracy of the Indoor Navigation System, such as multipath effects, environmental interference, etc. This paper presents an investigation of the factors that could lead to inaccuracy during the navigation process by obtaining the respective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). A simulation framework for a LED-based Indoor Navigation System is developed. A unique frequency modulation (F-ID) modulation technique was used in the transmitter to assign a unique frequency identification for each LED. A photodiode was used to convert the received optical signal into an electrical signal. The Received Signal Strength (RSS) method and trilateration algorithm are adopted to evaluate the receiver device’s location. The LED-based Indoor Navigation System framework is evaluated using positioning estimation errors and SNR.

I. Introduction

Nowadays, light emitting diodes (LEDs) are increasingly adopted for general lightings in residential and public areas. The advantages of LEDs are extensively mentioned in many literature sources, such as low implementation cost, free electromagnetic interference, higher power efficiency, longer service life [1]. As the adoption of LEDs has grown rapidly in recent years, the LEDs’ application has drawn the interest of researchers and industry.
