1 Introduction
Recent advances in three-dimensional model acquisition and tertiary storage technology have resulted in the wide availability of massive geometric data sets. The Digital Michelangelo Project [15] at Stanford University has produced finely detailed polygonal meshes containing up to two billion triangles. In the scientific domain, the Visible Human Project has generated data sets of over 10 billion voxels, while the DOE ASCI project has a goal of visualiz-inz multi-gigabyte iso-surface datasets.
