Abstract:

Smart city is the new demand of this world. This ’smart’ concept is related to the increase in automation and leads to reduce the human involvements at different phase. Intelligent transport system (ITS) is an important part of smart city. In this work we have proposed a 5G communication based smart parking lot occupancy system where vehicles can communicate each other through OBUs (On Board Units) and other RSUs (Road Side Units). With this capability, a vehicle can inform all the units when it is about to leave and an incoming vehicle can get the update about free space. We have predicted a waiting queue for the incoming vehicles when parking lot is full and predicted a optimal position about the placement of RSUs. The target of this work is to optimize the use of the entire parking lot and also to reduce the chances of failure to allocate a parking lot. We have simulated our proposed model using SUMO and omnet + + simulators and measured performance in terms of success rate of allocation of parking lots and different QoS parameters like packet drop and delay in response.

I. Introduction

A quite large number of people use vehicles, specially CAR for their transportation in urban areas. Urban people and their transportation is the target area for the implementation of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) [1], [2]. In recent times, rapid development of this transportation system is being observed in many of the developed countries. In all the countries people are trying to convert every city to a smart city and paper [3] shows how traffic management in intelligent transport system becomes an essential part of smart city. Connected vehicles are considered as one of the main components of this system. Companies like Tesla, Volkswagon are going to launch cars, equipped with a device which can help vehicles to communicate among themselves. With a recent survey, there will be huge number of this kind of vehicles available in the market in near future. Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is a kind of ad-hoc network, where vehicles are acting as a node and can communicate with each other wirelessly. V2V, V2I, V2X all these are variations of VANET. VANET is a base platform for this type of experiment. Self-organizing multi-hop network and establishing a proper dedicated path is a widely popular topic of research.
