Geographic Information Systems to Improve Road Safety

This article proposes solution for analyzing road safety level on sections of road network (RN) using geographic information systems as part of intelligent transport systems (ITS). Namely, one of DCRE (Driver-Car-Road-Environment) system components - “road”, and its impact on traffic safety, were studied in detail, and solutions for identifying typical sections in geoinformation systems (GIS) were presented. Various factors affecting road safety, accident likelihood and severity of their consequences are considered, depending on hazardous areas location (in settlements and beyond).

I. Introduction

Modern technologies development in transport area has long since switched over to working with Big data. At the same time, in addition to existing solutions, it is necessary to develop principles for constructing spatial-temporal digital terrain model, including transport infrastructure. This makes it necessary to refine technology for collecting, processing, storing and providing data on road infrastructure based on Big data and existing cloud systems development to ensure operation of analysis and data provision systems. Road safety (RS) is one of the most important components in developing analytical methods.
