Abstract:

As a non-invasive electrophysiological detection technology, electroencephalograph (EEG) is one of the means to diagnose diseases. In addition, EEG is widely used in many fields, such as emotion recognition. Eye tracking technology can record the subjects' saccade, blink, fixation time and pupil changes, which has been applied in the field of psychology. However, there are not many applications about the combination of EEG and eye tracking in recent years. The main purpose of this review is to summarize the application of combined brain computer interface (BCI) and eye tracking. Furthermore, we also discuss the future development of BCI and eye tracking.

I. Introduction

BCI is a direct connection between brain and external devices, which allows bidirectional information exchange between brain and external devices. BCI system is often used to study, assist, enhance or repair human cognitive or sensorimotor functions. As a non-invasive brain computer interface, EEG is an objective and reliable method for brain function assessment, which is mainly used to measure neural activity signals. EEG has been applied to scientific research in a number of fields. EEG can be used to detect certain diseases, such as depression [1], epilepsy, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), in addition, some researchers also use EEG for emotion recognition. However, a single EEG signal sometimes cannot achieve the desired results. Some researchers are experimenting with multimodal fusion for scientific research. Eye tracking technology can well reflect some indicators such as fixation point and fixation time of subjects. Eye movement tracking technology was mainly used in the field of psychology. In recent years, researchers have begun to combine EEG with eye tracking to detect depression, ASD and AD. In addition, there are also emotion recognition.
