Abstract:

In this paper we discuss the various methods that have been proposed for the purpose of predicting the distance that can be traversed by an Electric Vehicle with the energy that is left unutilized in the battery. With the growing concerns on the exhaustion of energy resources and the inevitable consequences that are dawned upon us a result of global warming caused by traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) have drawn more of people's attention. The battery is the key to the progress of EVs. Lithiumion batteries, featured by high energy density, low self-discharge rate and long cycle life have found numerous applications in the domain of EV power supply systems. Owing to the impediment caused by the establishment of charging stations and the cost of implementation, it is very important for the driver to be fully aware of the distance that he can traverse with the energy that is left unutilized in the battery. In this paper, we provide an overview of the current state of this field taking into consideration the efficiency of the vehicle as well as convenience of the driver. We also discuss the drawbacks and benefits of each method that is feasible for the purpose of range prediction.

I. Introduction

Human beings are the children of nature and it is our responsibility as dutiful citizens to protect mother earth. The development of advanced transportation technologies has become the need of the hour solution to reduce the usage of imported oil and the emission of greenhouse gases which are hazardous to the environment and its mankind. The alarming call for the need for a greener tomorrow paved way for the concept of a battery-powered vehicle. Electric and Hybrid Vehicles have gained popularity due to the fact that they are devoid of excessive noise and emission of harmful pollutants. These factors clubbed with the ease of driving has always made them a popular option among the consumers.
