Model Predictive Control based Load Frequency Control for Power Systems with Wind Turbine Generators

This paper proposes a new model predictive control (MPC) strategy for load frequency control (LFC) of wind power grid-connected power system. Firstly, the state space model of the LFC incorporating the dynamic model of WTs is derived by combining the original dynamic models of power system LFC with the dynamic models of wind turbines. On this basis, a predictive model is established to forecast the system state in the future. Then, a novel MPC control strategy is proposed based on the predictive model and the formulation of MPC optimization problem. With the information of wind speed, this control strategy can easily forecast the system state and response to wind power fluctuation effectively according to the system performance. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the MPC LFC strategy and its advantages over existing methods.

I. Introduction

Load frequency control (LFC) plays an important role in the operation of power systems. Its main function is to balance the power generation with the load demand during load and source variations [1].
