Vulnerability Analysis of IEC61850 Standards in Distributed Energy System

This paper demonstrated such real attacks on distributed energy systems. We assume hackers have ability to connect the IEC61850 communication net. The attacks include four types man in the middle attack, flag attack, packet length attack and function attack. We found the IEC61850 vulnerability which cause the serious damage to distributed energy test bed and would bring potential risk to the substations and power system.

I. Introduction

IEC61850 standards are designed for communication networks and systems in substations and would be used in distributed energy system. It has many advantages when the substations get power grid data (condition data, control data, status data) transport from the IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Device) via process bus and substation buses. Since the IEC 61850 standard has some advantages in terms of interoperability and long-term stability, it has been adopted as one of the core communication standards of the smart grid, which is a special case in network physical infrastructure
