Mathematical Model of a Five-Phase Pentacle Connected IM Supplied by a VSI Inverter with PWM Output Voltage Control

The contribution deals with mathematical model of a five-phase induction motor (IM), whose winding is pentacle connected. The motor is supplied by a five-legs voltage source inverter (VSI) with PWM output voltage control. Inverter output voltages are expressed in the form of complex Fourier series. From inverter leg voltages, the voltage space phasor formula is developed, which is applied to IM equivalent circuit. Following stator and rotor current space phasors are calculated. Using these electromagnetic torque waveform for different motor operating states is investigated.

I. Introduction

At present five-phase variable-speed drives at present are considered to be deployed for numerous applications including electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, traction and ship propulsions. Relative to the three-phase motors, they have more suitable distribution of the magneto-motive force (MMF) along the air gap, lower emitted noise and improved efficiency.
