I. Introduction
Real-time image lossless and near-lossless compression is of great demands for high information fidelity in some critical missions, such as satellite remote sensing, space exploration and nuclear medical imaging. Among various existing lossless and near-lossless compression algorithms, as an ITU/ISO standard for continuous-tone images compression, JPEG-LS is an appealing choice due to its coding scheme LOCO-I, which achieves the best complexity and compression rate tradeoff [1]–[4]. In the past decades, the hardware implementations based on the application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and field-programmable gate-array (FPGA) for LOCO-I algorithm have attracted wide studies [5]–[13].
