Abstract:

The paper gives an overview of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) from the viewpoint of energy consumption focused on the network security. The security issues are nowadays significant for all wireless (and wired as well) networks; however, in wireless sensors, limitations of the available energy have to be taken into account. Therefore, the network managers/designers have to decide whether a secure communication in the system required or not. The major part of the paper is in presenting the energy consumption model implemented in Matlab/Simulink environment to evaluate the energy requirements of each considerable security solution compared to opened (means non-secure) system.
