Some capabilities of magnetic implosion of high-velocity condensed-matter liners in the ALT-3 driver

Simulations of the ALT-3 driver with a modified measuring unit and liner assembly are reported. They demonstrate new capabilities of the driver as applied to materials properties studies under ramp and shock compression to ~20Mbar and ~80Mbar, respectively.

I. Introduction

Magnetically driven liner implosion has advantages over high-explosive driven implosion, including the nearly instantaneous (with the speed of light) equilibration of magnetic pressure on the liner, shockless liner drive, higher driving pressures and better control of their magnitude and rise time.
