Real time prediction of bus arrival time: A review

Bus Transportation plays an important role in modern society and has been developed in many parts of the world. It reduces the private vehicle usage; fuel consumption and more over reduce traffic congestion, if the arrival time of the buses is accurate. In this paper, various literatures have been surveyed which is used for prediction of bus arrival time. Real time prediction of arrival time is so much valuable for passengers and transport departments. It reduces the waiting time which they have faced during trips and having a satisfaction to know about the schedule of the bus.

I. Introduction

Effective bus travel time prediction plays an important role for intelligent transport system. Bus transportation reduces the private vehicle usage, fuel consumption and moreover reduces traffic congestion, if the arrival times of the buses are accurate. Traffic congestion directly affects the accessibility and mobility of buses in decreasing order and moreover travel time and air pollution is increased. Most of the institute, companies are provided transportation facility to their employees, students, workers, staff etc. so they can reach easily and comfortably reached their respected places timely but sometime due to delay in arrival they do not avail the transportation facility. Many of the private bus companies provide the timetable on the web, but that is not sufficient for knowing the exact arrival time of the bus and due to some unpredictable traffic, traffic lights, road conditions, weather conditions there is delay or early arrival of the buses at particular stop.
