I. Introduction
Three-Dimensional (3D) video is becoming more and more popular in consumer electronics and industrial applications since it is capable of providing 3D depth and more realistic visual perception. To support free viewpoint viewing and enhance the immersive 3D viewing experience of the 3D video, view synthesis techniques are employed to generate the virtual viewpoint images with the help of both color video data and depth video data, where the depth video is geometrical information and describes the distance between camera and objects in a scene. Therefore, many researchers have devoted their efforts on the depth video processing, which includes depth estimation and generation, pre and post-enhancement processing, coding optimization and view synthesis. In 3D video system, both the color and depth videos shall be compressed and transmitted to clients. For the sake of reducing the depth data volume in storage and bit rate in transmission, efficient depth video coding algorithm is also highly desired.
