Abstract:
The large signal dynamic response of chains of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is much faster than that of the individual constituent EDFAs. The small-signal dynamic response of multi-amplifier networks, especially in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) applications, is also important, for example, in the design of systems with supervisory channels relying on small amplitude signal or gain modulations. We present a general perturbation theory suitable for an arbitrary number of channels in single EDFAs or systems with cascaded EDFAs. The simulation results agree well with experimental data.
