Abstract:

Now a well-established video compression method is block-matching method that is in the core of all MPEG and H.26x standards. But this method involves motion estimation and motion compensation, thus the computational complexity is high. The 3D-DCT video coding is a method with great potentials, and the scanning order and quantization of 3-D DCT coefficients play a crucial role in the coding effect. So, the 3-D DCT principle and statistical performance are analyzed in detail. And on this basis, adaptive quantization and scanning is proposed in the paper. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the proposed method is a very effective way for these video which inter-frame correlation is weak or strong.

I. Introduction

Nowadays, video compression techniques play an important role in the multimedia, HDTV, video conference and others video communication services. As we known, there are several established international standards, such as H.26x[1], MPEG[2], and so forth. These standards mainly adopts the motion estimation and motion compensation approach to exploit the inter frame correlation.
