1. Study Design and Evaluation Methodology
This study evaluates H.264 codec performance, scientifically varying some codec parameters to find optimal settings. H.264 (aka MPEG-4 part 10) is increasingly being used for video compression in both commercial and military applications. H.264 builds on MPEG-2 technology, using macroblock-based motion prediction. H.264 allows considerably more flexibility in encoding than MPEG-2, and so H.264 can be as much as twice as efficient as MPEG-2, provided that the H.264 encoder has enough processing power [1].
