1. Introduction
Hearing losses, especially impairments of the inner ear, generate large problems for the communication of the affected persons. In contrast to typical vision impairments, hearing impairments are difficult to compensate which implies strong performance requirements for hearing aids. In the past decade, a large progress in hearing aid development was observed especially due to the introduction of digital hearing aids and the development of sophisticated audio signal processing algorithms, such as beamformers, noise reduction, and signal compression.
