Abstract:

The following paper reports the first phase of case study being conducted in automobile industry. The project regards the improvement of operations management through more efficient production sequence planning and its control. In the paper the issues related to monitoring of production plans execution are analyzed. Authors present briefly the theoretical background of research and discuss main problems that have appeared by analyses of manufacturing system performance. The operational management performance measures design by authors is presented. The further steps of research to be conducted are proposed.

1. Introduction

The manufacturing system is treated as a complex entity combining technological-, social, economics subsystems and being influenced by business environment. Production planning in dynamic changing business environment must be capable of dealing with uncertainty and supports the ability to fulfill customer expectation for shorter delivery times, higher quality and cost effectiveness. The effective production processes control requires the appropriate mechanisms for process flow monitoring and its normalization in case when fluctuations appear, which scope is bigger then the buffering abilities of manufacturing system. Simultaneously the traditional methods for production planning and control are not always sufficient in conditions of uncertainty. Insufficient production processes planning and control might cause a crisis that threats seriously the production system operations continuity. In the case that has been the basis for the project, the automotive manufacturer has a problem in fulfilling the due-to-order deliveries of final product in required by clients' time horizon. The aim of the research was to improve the production planning and control activates in order to achieve higher reliability of planned production sequence. The preliminary research has showed that there a research gap regarding the techniques for evaluation of operations management performance in conditions of uncertainty. In following paper authors assume that the operations management performance is measured as a relation between production plans and the executed real production of finished goods in a defined production cycle. The contribution of the paper is a presentation of a set of new measures that might be implemented into production system monitoring in automotive industry.
