As the Internet is rapidly expanding, the landscape of social and economical activities are rapidly changing. In this paper, we describe summaries of researches conducted as a part of the 21st Century Center of Excellence Program (21st Century COE Program), Informatics Research Center for Development of Knowledge Society Infrastructure. Our focus is on developing new information exchange infrastructures for knowledge society. Our researches are categorized into two. One is access control of XML documents, and the other is business rule processing for e-commerce. XML is now regarded as a common language for information exchange on the Internet. Access control of XML documents is dealing with various aspects of regulating access, so that unauthorized access to data can be prevented. The latter is dealing with business rules on e-commerce. Formal treatment of business rules is important for advanced automated e-commerce systems. In the following, we briefly describe our research topics, classified into the above two categories.
