Abstract:

In order to verify the design procedures for superconducting machines, a small 2-pole externalpole synchronous generator with a stationary field winding of NbTi has been built and tested. A report on the first 20 test cycles is given, including discussion of difficulties encountered. In addition to steady-state measurements, which agree well with the calculations, the results of the first tests of transient behaviour are given. The program given for future tests indicates concentration more on the transient behaviour of the machine and on studies of the protection system for the superconducting winding.
