Front and rear image generation module for depth-fused 3-D display

We have developed an image generation module for the depth-fused 3-D (DFD) display, which can show 3-D images using the DFD visual illusion. The module generates the front and rear images from the 2-D original image and depth-map image. The module uses a field programmable gate array (FPGA). This module shows 3-D images at the full video rate and easily provides a video interface for DFD display users

I. Introduction

Three-dimensional (3-D) display technology can present the real world. Current 3-D display mechanisms [1] are stereoscopy, integral photography, volumetric display [2], and holography [3]. However, at this stage, the only practical 3-D display for electronic color moving 3-D images is the stereoscopic display, which needs special equipment, such as a lenticular sheet or a parallax barrier in front of the display or glasses for observers.
