Characteristics of rain attenuation on broadband fixed wireless access systems in 38 GHz band

We constructed a broadband network with fixed wireless access (FWA) systems and have been evaluating the influence of rain attenuation on point-to-point FWA systems at 38-GHz-band millimeter waves. Method of estimating rain attenuation and experiments are given.

1. Introduction

In recent years, communication via the Internet has expanded, and the demand for high speed and reliable access links has grown increasingly. Fixed wireless access (FWA) systems using millimeter-band waves have been considered because they have a high capacity and are easy and inexpensive to construct. However, rain attenuation affects wireless access systems in the millimeter-wave band, so received power will be reduced and communication quality will deteriorate.
