Abstract:
The authors propose a novel user interface, the Graphical Knowledge Level interface, for user-database interaction. This interface addresses two of the current research problems: the semantic inadequacy of the relational model and the logical data dependence of the relational languages. The interface is more user-friendly than the SOL interface and the Universal Relation interface, as it employs the graphical approach. The semantic inadequacy problem is alleviated by using an enhanced entity-relationship model. This data model includes abstraction concepts such as aggregation, generalization, and categorization. A formal, high-level Graphical Knowledge Level Query Language, GKQL, which provides for both logical and physical data independence has also been designed.<>

Kiuchi, Hiroyoshi; Touhara, Tosio; Fukumura, Masaaki, "METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR GENERATING ARBITRARY OUTPUT RECORDS IN RESPONSE TO OUTPUT DESIGNATION OF RECORDS"
Inventors:
Kiuchi, Hiroyoshi; Touhara, Tosio; Fukumura, Masaaki
Abstract:
In order to obtain an accounting form required by a person who has no expert knowledge, a first designation units designates record names of output records, and item contents (e.g., item codes) of the output records to be extracted, and a second designation units designates item names to be output as data items of the output records, and output object items to be extracted as data items in correspondence with the item names. Then, records which coincide with the designated item contents are read out from a predetermined file, and a processor processes data of the output object items on the basis of the readout records in units of record names of the output records. The processed output records are output in accordance with an arranged order of the record names designated by the first designation units, and data of the output object items of the output records are output in accordance with an arranging order of the item names designated by the second designation units. Therefore, by only designating record names of output records, their item names, output object items and the like in accordance with an output image of, e.g. an accounting form, the accounting form according to the designated contents can be output without generating a code system in advance so as to obtain a desired accounting form.

Banning, Kenneth Ray; James, Wendy Sue; Li, Shih-Gong, "METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR GRAPHICALLY DISPLAYING QUERY RELATIONSHIPS"
Inventors:
Banning, Kenneth Ray; James, Wendy Sue; Li, Shih-Gong
Abstract:
A method, system and program for providing a graphical interface for a database are accomplished by the operation of a process in the memory of a processor. The definition of individual predicates, the definition of the relationship of predicates, the editing of predicates, and the editing of the relationship of predicates is simplified and rendered dynamic and interactive for the user thereby facilitating the completion of the task being performed. The user need not remember the related column information for a specified predicate because the system will provide that information simultaneously with the predicate definition in a form that supports the direct manipulation of the related information. The predicates and their relationship are displayed simultaneously with the definition activities for both the initial definition and any subsequent editing activities. The user may select this information and drag it to the desired location to proceed on the desired activity.

Inventors:
Banning, Kenneth Ray; James, Wendy Sue; Li, Shih-Gong
Abstract:
A method, system and program for providing a graphical interface for a database are accomplished by the operation of a process in the memory of a processor. A selected entry in the database is dynamically used as input to a conditional definition dialog box. The definition of individual conditions, the definition of the relationship of conditions to the selected entries, the editing of conditions, and the editing of the relationship of conditions is simplified and rendered dynamic and interactive for the user thereby facilitating the completion of the task being performed. The user need not remember the related column information for a specified predicate because the system will provide that information simultaneously with the conditional definition in a form that supports the direct manipulation of the related information. The selected entries and their relationship are displayed simultaneously with the definition activities for both the initial definition and any subsequent editing activities. The user may select this information and drag it to the desired location to proceed on the desired activity.
