1. Introduction
IP networks are spreading rapidly throughout society and have recently received new demand for carrying voice, video, and mission-critical data concurrently. This new demand requires IP network connectivity to become more and more connection- oriented. The impact of this transition from a connectionless network to a connection-oriented network can be seen in the intensive usage of the Internet for telephony services. Along with this new demand, monitoring and maintenance of network quality has become an important area of concern. Network operations and maintenance require live network monitoring of in-service traffic, latency, and delay variation (jitter) as well as prompt troubleshooting. Network monitoring and performance testing are subjects well covered by the domain literature and by the industry. Various products, either hardware or software, or a combination thereof, are described in abundant literature specifications, catalog files, and scientific papers published in prestigious technical journals or conference proceedings.
