OFC 2004 workshop on optical and electronic mitigation of impairments

This paper provides an overview of OFC 2004 Workshop on Optical and Electronic Mitigation of Impairments from the perspective of the invited speakers. The workshop was held on February 23, 2004.

I. Introduction and Opening Remarks

The last year has witnessed the introduction and commercialization of electronic techniques for intersymbol interference (ISI) mitigation in optical networks, including feed-forward equalizers (FFE), decision feedback equalizers (DFE), and very recently, maximum likelihood sequence estimators (MLSE). At the same time, pure optical FFE implementations have been demonstrated along with new efficient line-codes and modulation formats for mitigation of chromatic dispersion.
