I. Introduction
THE Karhunen–Loève transform (KLT) plays a fundamental role in a variety of disciplines, including statistical pattern matching, filtering, estimation theory, and source coding, and has been used, for example, in certain image coding applications (e.g., [1]). In many of these applications, the KLT is known to be “optimal” in various senses. This paper investigates the optimality of the KLT for source coding.
