Medical fluorescence diagnostic systems have often incorporated fiberoptic probes for delivery and collection of light. However, there has been minimal data published regarding the origin of detected signals for these devices . We have recently completed computational investigations of the effect of probe design on signal origin. In addition to providing basic information on light-tissue interaction, our findings may be useful in developing fiberoptic probes to optimize cancer detection and characterize fluorophore distributions.5, 6 The purpose of this study was to experimentally validate trends seen in our theoretical studies.
