Testing Methodology for Measuring Carbon Dioxide Concentration, Temperature, and Humidity Under Surgical Face Masks

This study aims to develop a methodology for testing face masks by measuring carbon dioxide concentration, temperature, and humidity. The study focuses on three types of surgical face masks from different manufacturers. The experiments conducted demonstrate that the proposed methodology is effective in determining the levels of carbon dioxide, temperature, and humidity retained under the masks. It was found that Mask 1 is best for comfort, Mask 2 is optimal for consistent performance, and Mask 3 is suited for better. The choice depends on which aspect-temperature, consistency, or $CO_{2}$ management-is most critical for the intended use.

I. Introduction

Carbon dioxide is a natural component of the at-mosphere and a physiologically important gas due to its role in cellular metabolism [1]. It is used as an indicator of air quality, being one of the most prevalent and largely neglected toxic gases [2], [3]. Recent findings indicate that the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus can be transmitted mainly in the form of aerosols, making a useful surrogate for as-sessing indoor air quality and the risk of viral infection [2].
