Abstract:

This paper is aimed at proposing a new adaptive controller to calculate the overall inertia in the system. The proposed controller estimates the sudden change in the load value that gives the required amount of inertia of the power system. The enhancement of the stability margins for the system is done by injecting virtual inertia to the system via the virtual synchronous generator. IEEE 9-bus system has been chosen for the verification of the proposed control. The effectiveness of the controller is verified by comparing the simulation results with the values for real data points. MATLAB® Simulink software is used for the simulations in this study. The results show that the virtual synchronous generator enhances the critical clearing time for the system by 14 ms compared to the normal inverter.

I. Introduction

The main objective of the power system is to deliver the electrical power from generating plants to the consumers with minimum losses (higher efficiency), stable operation, and continuous service [1]. This is achieved by building a robust protection and control systems that operate along with the power system to locate and clear the faults or disturbances, to change the system topology, and to keep the system stable [2].
