Overhead Power Transmission Lines Fault Detection Using Non-contact Sensing System

The most common approach to monitoring the operating states of the overhead power transmission lines involves the use of contact sensors. They are connected directly to the wire or require placing the overhead power transmission line wires inside the measuring sensor. Installation and dismantling of such sensors requires disconnecting the overhead power transmission line from voltage during the work. This, in turn, leads to equipment downtime and determination of the parameters of the line itself. The presented article describes the characteristics of the operating mode parameters of an overhead power transmission line (currents and voltages) using systems of non-contact magnetic and weak field sensors. This approach makes it possible to install and dismantle sensors without affecting the performance of the overhead power transmission lines. Moreover, it eliminates the impact of measuring instruments on the object under consideration. The architecture of the proposed system and the operating principle of sensors are described. They determine the parameters of the overhead power transmission lines based on changes in magnetic and electromagnetic fields. Additionally, the dependence of allocation of non-contact sensors in terms of their sensitivity is determined for normal and emergency modes of the overhead power transmission line.

One of the main tasks facing the energy complex around the world is the development of fundamentally new approaches to modernization and innovative development of the industry. New approaches should be aimed at increasing the reliability and quality of power supply, creating opportunities for active interaction between the power generation and consumption, expanding capabilities for managing consumption, and also the mass introduction of environmentally friendly power technologies. These approaches are formulated in the form of the Smart Grid concept.
