Abstract:

Academic investigations into VANETs range back to the early 2000s. New protocols, technologies, and varied application scenarios have emerged in response to the potential for automobiles to communicate with one another through a wireless network. Many simulators were created because evaluating these research contributions using a real testbed presented significant challenges. New research problems on VANETs are emerging as a result of the rise of autonomous cars and the development of cutting-edge technology for example 5G and edge computing. So, it's important to take a second look at VANET simulations to see if they can still evaluate these new scenarios. In this work, we provide a comprehensive overview of the current status and capabilities of VANET simulators, demonstrating their use in evaluating innovative situations in VANET research. We use this analysis to highlight some of the most pressing questions that present and future VANET simulations will need to answer.
