Abstract:

In recent years, Blockchain technology has earned significant consideration from the smart cities developer community due to its ability to provide security, privacy, and authentication. Reconfiguration is also a challenge in IoT-based smart cities architecture, where sensor nodes need to change their behavior by the undefined conditions. In this paper, we develop a solution by integrating Blockchain into smart cities architecture to ensure security and privacy in the reconfiguring process. After deploying IoTex – an private Blockchain framework into smart cities architecture, we design a variety of smart contracts to simulate a IoT reconfiguring process. Blockchain’s features are evaluated by calculating the smart contract’s cost. On the other hand, the whole system’s performance is also measured and evaluated.

I. Introduction

Over the past few decades, the urban population has surpassed other regions in all countries, accounting for 57% of the world population [1]. This leads to opportunities for rapid growth of cities. However, the rapid increase in the number of residents leads to many challenges for managers, such as traffic congestion, water shortage, energy management, urban planning, health risks, and environmental pollution, just a few.
