Abstract:

In this paper, we present the development of a textile-based strain sensor aimed at creating a lightweight and portable device. The sensor is designed as an interdigitated capacitor, consisting of two electrodes fabricated from commercially available conductive material and adhered to an elastic non-conductive textile substrate. The elastic properties of the substrate enable the sensor to undergo stretching, thereby modifying its geometry (the separation between electrode fingers) and consequently influencing its electrical properties, specifically capacitance. Initial testing of the developed sensor involved three stretching positions, with the results confirming the effective functionality of the designed sensor. Moreover, suitable electronics, including a microcontroller for data acquisition, have been developed. The sensor was positioned on the elbow to assess its performance, particularly in monitoring arm flexion. The results have validated the consistent operation of the system.
