Chapter Abstract:
The electric machinery considered includes not only classic rotating machines, such as direct current (DC), asynchronous, and synchronous motors and generators, but also new electric machine architectures that have resulted from the simultaneous development of the electromagnetic machinery, the controller, and the power electronics combined with the introduction of new materials, such as permanent magnets. This chapter covers a number of aspects that are common to electric machine control in general. Today, information technology is a necessary component of electrical drive system implementation. Modern processors are capable of handling the high‐accuracy control algorithms, and they adjust electrical drive physical behaviour to meet set targets. Efficient data transmission between the various components of the electrical drive becomes possible with information technology. This exchange of data can be wireless, or the data may be transmitted along electrical or optical cables. The continuing development of power electronics and microprocessors is improving the characteristics of electrical drives.
